Skin Surgery Q & A

Why do I need skin surgery?

Skin surgery is often the best way to remove suspicious cells or lesions that require a biopsy or to get rid of uncomfortable or abnormal growths. You may need skin surgery to treat and remove any of the following types of growths:

  • Warts
  • Moles
  • Cysts
  • Keloids
  • Skin cancer

Most skin surgeries are in-office procedures performed with modern tools and techniques, so you won’t have to worry about an extensive downtime.

What can I expect from skin surgery?

Though you’re going to be awake during your skin surgery at Kaminska Dermatology, Dr. Kaminska ensures you’re entirely numbed beforehand, so you won’t feel any pain or discomfort.

Dr. Kaminska may use a surgical scalpel to remove the growth, cyst, wart, or other abnormal lesion. If she notices any abnormal cells during this procedure, known as an “excision,” she may send your specimen off to the lab for a biopsy.

For removal of precancerous or cancerous tissue, Dr. Kaminska might use an electric needle to carefully remove the tumor. This allows her to burn the surrounding tissue to destroy any possible cancer cells that may be present.

Alternatively, Dr. Kaminska could recommend a cryotherapy procedure, which involves using liquid nitrogen to freeze growths and destroy them on the spot. This procedure, commonly used to target warts or actinic keratoses (precancerous growths), forces the treated tissue to blister and peel away over time.

In any case, your skin surgery procedure from Kaminska Dermatology is entirely tailored to you. Dr. Kaminska cares for you throughout every step of your preoperative and postoperative stages, too, so you can receive the education you need every step of the way.

Will I have a scar after skin surgery?

Dr. Kaminska is an expert at preserving healthy tissue and is diligent about doing everything possible to minimize your risk of scarring. Although scarring is often unavoidable after skin surgery, Dr. Kaminska can teach you how to care for the wound and counsel you about which products you should be using to promote healing and decrease the development of scar tissue.

If you need skin surgery or would like a second opinion, contact Kaminska Dermatology for an evaluation. You can conveniently book an appointment either online or over the phone.
